STAFF SERGEANT WILBUR J. MYERS | AGE: (97) | RESIDES: HAGERSTOWN, MD
UNITED STATES ARMY – B COMPANY, 692ND TANK DESTROYER BATTALION
Battles: Rhineland | Ardennes-Alsace | Central Europe Pocket
SHORT BIOGRAPHY: JACK MYERS almost enlisted after Pearl Harbor, but he waited for the draft to make sure no one stole his girlfriend. After taking care of that, he became a machine gunner in a tank destroyer battalion during the push towards Berlin. He trained on three-inch guns that were both towed and self-propelled, and he was a little annoyed with the discipline, but it paid off later. JACK MEYERS remembers back to his role as a gunner serving in Army’s 692 Tank Destroyer Battalion (Sherman Tank). He remembers leading a team of five men as if it was yesterday. Three of Myer’s men died during the war- two died of bullet wounds – one was killed from shrapnel. The unit liberated the Dachau Concentration Camp, and one of their captured Gestapo agents was the first spy to be executed. When the war was over, JACK MYERS returned home, he used the GI Bill to significant effect, learning a trade which supported him for more than fifty decades. JACK MYERS also has some words for those who criticize Harry Truman for using the atomic bomb.
