About the Project
On January 20, 1942, fifteen high-ranking Nazi bureaucrats gathered at a villa on the shores of Lake Wannsee in Berlin. In just 90 minutes, over coffee and cognac, they quietly mapped out the administrative logistics for the systematic murder of six million European Jews.
To mark the 85th anniversary of the Wannsee Conference, the American-Eastern European Council presents a flagship dramatic reading of Night in Wannsee, a searing dark political satire by acclaimed playwright and dissident Victor Shenderovich.
Set in the present day at the historic Wannsee villa, the play brings together five ghosts of the original Nazi officials. As they try to shift blame onto bureaucracy, military orders, and historical circumstance while awaiting their Führer—who appears only as a buzzing mosquito—the drama builds toward a chilling climax. Post-war bureaucrat turned lobbyist Dr. Georg Leibbrandt delivers a razor-sharp monologue exposing how ancient antisemitism is "repackaged" through modern political rhetoric to justify hatred anew.

About the Playwright
Victor Shenderovich is one of Eastern Europe's most prominent satirists, political essayists, and human rights figures. An outspoken critic of totalitarianism and state aggression, he was forced into European exile due to his principled opposition to authoritarian regimes. Through his plays, public lectures, and writings, Shenderovich uses the power of theater to challenge state propaganda and preserve collective memory.
